Pottery, shaped the way it always has been

In a small village called Mend, in Razavi Khorasan, a father and his son shape clay the way it has been shaped there for over 5,000 years, the only living tradition of its kind in eastern Iran. Every piece in our collection comes directly from their hands.

Made by Hand, Passed Down

The father shapes each piece by hand, and his son paints it once baked, using patterns that have decorated Gonabad pottery for generations: flowers and birds. Each piece is fired at 950°C in ovens built into the ground, a method used in Mend for centuries. Yet the result fits easily into today's life: every piece is dishwasher- and microwave-safe.
When you hold a piece from Mend, you are holding a tradition that goes back thousands of years, made today by two hands that learned it from the two hands before them. A new piece, made the old way, still being made, still being used, still being passed down.
